How did you get the background without smearing in the black background?
As for your question, I really don't know enough about apo to explain how. I have been playing with the basic julia circle shape that I found in this [link] tutorial. A lot of trial and error, adding extra triangles and manipulating their settings to make them move into the circle. (if that makes any sense...)
